Art Wall Jr. Golf Hall of Fame Petition
Art Wall Jr. a professional golfer in the 50's & 60's won 14 PGA tournaments, 8 South America Invitational tournaments and 2 Senior tournaments. He also won the coveted Masters tournament in 1959 and was named PGA Player of the Year in 1959. In the Masters he was 6 strokes back on the final day with 7 holes to play. He birdied 5 of the last 6 holes and went on to win by one stroke over Gary Middlecoff and by 2 strokes over defendng Champ Arnold Palmer. He played on the United States Ryder Cup team in 1957, 1959 and 1961. He won the Vardon Trophy in 1959 for the lowest stroke average on the tour. He also had 45 career holes in one. The 9 hole par 3 tournament played on the Wednesday before the Masters, Art Wall holds the all time record for the lowest score. He scored a 20 for 7 under par. Mr. Wall is also given credit for changing the tournament cut line rule. The change allowed all players within 10 strokes of the leader to contimue play on the last 2 days of the tournament. He graduated from Duke University in 1949 with a degree in business administration. He served in World War II and did not play professional golf until he was almost 27 years old. He died in Scranton Pa. in 2001 at the age of 77. If you agree that Mr. Wall should be inducted posthumously into the World Golf Hall of Fame please sign this petition and pass it along. We the under signed ask that you please recognize the contributions Mr. Art Wall Jr. has made to the game of golf. A true gentleman both on and off the course and a real credit to the game of golf. His professional carreer was delayed by his service in the United States Army during WWII. After the war, he attended and graduated from Duke University with a degree in Business Administration where he was named an All American. He was almost 27 when he turned professional. During the war he lost his younger brother when his submarine sank in the Pacific and was never recovered.
We urge you to recognize Mr. Wall and to nominate him posthumously in the Veterans Category for entry into World Golf Hall of Fame. Mr. Jack Peter of the Hall has advised us that Mr. Wall does meet the qualifications for entry. Some background information on Mr. Wall is included in the petition.
