for Social Distancing in Alameda

Reducing thru traffic on some small streets will help YOU…

Get fresh air and exercise

Keep a safe distance from people and cars

Slow down traffic

Reducing thru traffic on some small streets is a rapid response tool recommended by the National Association of City Transportation Officials during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Opening up street space enables pedestrians, joggers, and bike riders to exercise at a safe distance from people and cars without driving to park destinations. This space is achieved by temporarily converting select low-traffic streets to local vehicle access only, which provides the added benefit of slowing traffic down on these streets. Emergency vehicles, deliveries, and local residents will have uninterrupted access.

This is a LOW COST and EASY TO IMPLEMENT solution that can help keep Alamedans healthy and safe as we shelter in place.

SIGN TODAY TO TELL ALAMEDA CITY COUNCIL THAT YOU SUPPORT CONVERTING SELECT LOW-TRAFFIC STREETS TO LOCAL VEHICLE ACCESS ONLY.

City Council will take up the proposed expansion to Alameda Slow Streets at next Tuesday's council meeting. Near term expansions could include Pacific and Santa Clara. Longer term expansions could include San Jose and San Antonio, Ninth, Sixth, Versailles and more. Slow Streets will only continue while shelter-in-place is in effect. The Alameda Slow Streets pilot starts Thursday, April 30, on sections of Versailles and Pacific. Please complete the City's survey at slowstreetsalameda.org to encourage them to broaden it to more neighborhoods. Two disconnected streets are not enough for the program to be effective.

Thank you to all who signed in favor of Alameda slow streets! The petition was sent to City Council on Monday, April 20. City staff are working on a draft proposal for a two-street pilot at Versailles and Pacific plus expansion of pedestrian/cyclist space at Shoreline. We want to see more - we want a complete slow street network around Alameda during the pandemic. Please help us continue to advocate by contacting your council members (https://www.alamedaca.gov/GOVERNMENT/Elected-Officials).
