Plastic straws — dropped into drive-thru bags by servers, grabbed from buckets, or plucked from dispensers — are polluting the planet at a staggering rate. We should be concerned. A shocking 500 million plastic straws are used each day in the United States alone, most of which end up in landfills (due to their inability to be recycled) and in our waterways.
Once straws make it into bodies of water, they can end up terrorizing marine animals that mistake them for food and choke on them or get them caught in their guts. In 2015 a video went viral of a sea turtle struggling to breathe with a plastic straw stuck in its nasal cavity. This should not be our reality.
Stand up for the environment and demand that we put a ban on plastic straws at the University of Maryland.
