NY, Move Forward With Tougher Animal Cruelty Laws, Charges and Strict Penalties

  • por: Sue Lee

Any person who intentionally harms an animal in any manner needs to be held accountable but current laws are too menial to make an impact.  Many animal offenses receive misdemeanors with minor repercussions, only to have such persons continue the abuse.  Animals are living, breathing beings and deserve to be protected but unless changes are made, animal abuse, cruelty and neglect will never stop.  New York has made some attempts in securing stronger animal cruelty laws, and you can read more about their efforts at http://digitalcommons.pace.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1782&context=plr, along with other laws at http://animallawcoalition.com/improving-new-yorks-cruelty-laws/, and current charges nationwide at http://www.straypetadvocacy.org/PDF/AnimalCrueltyLaws.pdf

New York has bills pending that would increase penalties, keep abusers away from animals, and require those convicted of abusing, neglecting or fighting animals to undergo mental health evaluations and any other recommended treatments. I propose that any and all crimes against an animal be charged as Class B animal cruelty felonies with the above penalties and more.  All repercussions against defenseless animals should include longer jail sentences, higher fees, possible acts of community service hours and also being placed on an animal cruelty registry to be shared nationwide with anyone within the animal industry such as sales, care, breeding and treatment. Additionally, such abusers need to be banned for lifetime working with, caring for or owning animals for the rest of their life. There shouldn’t be any second chances because it should be common knowledge that abusing an animal, just like abusing a human is wrong and unjust. There is never a reason to intentionally harm an animal.

The purpose of this petition is to urge the New York State Legislators to move forward with bills that would increase penalties against animals and ensure charges of Class B felonies for any and all animal crimes.  There should never be a first or second chance, either because all good responsible humans know that animals are living, breathing creatures that deserve love and respect without intentional harm and abuse.  You can help me with my efforts by signing and sharing this petition, adding your own thoughts and comments in defense of animals throughout the state.
