Gestation crates, also called sow stalls, confine pigs for most of their lives in individual cages barely larger than their bodies. Sows are unable to turn around, stretch their limbs or take even one step forward or backward when confined in these crates. An undercover video by the Humane Society illustrates the misery endured by pigs in these crates.
The New Jersey State Assembly and Natural Resource Committee is considering Bill S.1921/A.3250 which, if passed, would phase out sow gestation crates statewide. A recent poll by Mason-Dixon Polling and Research shows that 91% of New Jersey voters already support the bill.
There is no reason for these highly intelligent, curious and social animals to spend years confined in these crates. Please sign the petition to support a ban on gestation crates in New Jersey.
