Demand a Fair Wage for Workers
The federal minimum wage has not been raised since the Bush Administration.
If it had kept up with productivity, it would be $24 an hour today. By 2025, it would be almost $30. But wages haven't kept up with productivity, and it's currently stuck at $7.25 while the costs of living like rent, healthcare, food, and more have skyrocketed.
Raising the minimum wage would affect 32 million workers, most of them Black and brown folks. While it's kept low, wealth that should go to workers is redistributed to CEOs, and income inequality surges.
Studies show that a low-wage worker needs at least $15 an hour to cover basic living costs anywhere in the United States. It's time to dismantle the American caste system and pay a living wage because employees deserve better, and they know it.
Workers have had enough. They're fighting back against inhumane conditions and low pay. From John Deere to Kellogg's, workers are demanding their rights to fair pay. Many of them have been on the front lines of the pandemic for the past year and a half. They worked hard and risked their lives for little reward.
Congress must stop listening to their corporate donors and more to their constituents. Two-thirds of Americans want to raise the minimum wage. It's time for lawmakers to deliver for the people.
