The proposed Trans-Mountain pipeline would carry diluted bitumen (dilbit) from the Alberta tarsands to the BC coast. The National Energy Board is responsible for hearing all voices who want to comment on the proposed project. However, they recently declined intervenor's request for them to review the most comprehensive study on diluted bitumen spills ever produced. This study is the best information there is on the environmental impacts of these kinds of spills. It is incredibly irresponsible for the NEB to ignore this critical information when making a decision about the feasibility of the proposed pipeline.
By signing today you are helping to protect the BC environment from the horrible impacts of a dilbit spill.
We, the undersigned, demand that the NEB review the information contained within the new study "Spills of Diluted Bitumen from Pipelines: A Comparative Study of Environmental Fate, Effects, and Response (2015)" in relation to the Trans-Mountain pipeline proposal. Several intervenors in the hearings have recently had their request for this review denied.
We know that it is irresponsible for the NEB to not completely review the most up-to-date information regarding the environmental and health impacts of an diluted biltumen spill. This study is the most comprehensive study that exists and we know that the information contained within must be considered in order to make a proper assessment of the risks involved in the pipeline proposal.
We know that diluted bitumen is a unique petrochemical that does not react the same as light crude in the environment and therefore understanding its unique properties and risks is imperative to making a well informed decision.
