Stop the Ban of Pit Bulls in Marion, AR

We do not know yet the specifics of the proposed ordinance - but have sent a request to Mayor Fogleman for a copy of the language being considered. We have heard that the existing families with Pit Bull Terriers may be grandfathered - but where does that leave the strays? The abused and neglected dogs? the shelter dogs? the foster dogs? the puppies on the side of the road?
Without going into all of the reasons why Breed Bans are unsuccessful - what we do know - is that this type of ordinance will take away any chance that the hundreds of Pit Bull Terriers and mixes that come through our local shelter annually have at a life and loving home.
The next City Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 28th at 7:00 p.m. at the Marion City Hall. The proposed ordinance to ban Pit Bull terriers in Marion, AR may be voted on at this meeting so we need your help right now to make sure this goes no further.

Dear City Council Members of Marion,
Breed bans are not an effective answer to the problem of dog bites or dog fighting.
Criminals will continue to break laws. Irresponsible dog owners will continue to be irresponsible.
The responsible pet owners and innocent animals will be the ones punished if this ban is passed.
Great Britain has had a four-breed ban in place for nearly 20 years, but it has failed to reduce the overall number of dog bites.
In 2008, The Netherlands scrapped its 15-year-old ban on pit bulls because it was ineffective.
During the last few decades in the United States, dog bites have dropped dramatically in major cities such as New York City, Baltimore and Minneapolis all without the added expense of breed bans.
Breed bans waste taxpayer dollars rounding up dogs simply because they look like certain breeds.
Targeting dogs based on their looks, safe dogs with responsible owners are affected while the irresponsible owners who create dangerous dogs are ignored.
Those communities who are serious about reducing dog bites should skip breed-specific legislation and opt for effective solutions, such as enforced leash laws, limitations on dog chaining, access to low cost spay/neuter and ample resources for animal control offices.
