Recently, Koala received status as a "Threatened Species" as populations are infected with chlamydia, an infection normally found in humans. It has been taking a huge toll on the koala population and rendering them infertile. Although it isn't fatal, it causes problems such as upper respiratory infections, conjunctivitis, and in many cases, infertility. About 40% of Australian female koalas are now infertile.
In addition to that, their natural habitat is being destroyed- logging companies are chopping down trees koalas have made home on Blue Gum plantations and are maiming and killing countless koalas in Victoria and South Australia. There is no government oversight, and trees are being chopped down- with koalas still in them.
Plantations are exporting timber as woodchip for paper production in Japan and China and witnesses have decribed injured koalas on clinging to trees chopped down being pulled through the shredder. Many do not survive the fall, and those that do are suffering from wounds, broken limbs and backs, and severed limbs.
List the koala immediately as Endangered, and bring a halt to to the abuse they face on these plantations. Save the koalas from extinction.
