End Stephen Harper's Billion-Dollar Big Oil Giveaway
A billion dollars is a lot of money.
A billion dollars could lift every Canadian senior out of poverty, with plenty left over to invest in renewable energies, clean technologies and energy-efficiency.
But Stephen Harper would rather hand $1.3 billion every year to the fossil fuel industry--a perverse subsidy that discourages investment in lower-emission and renewable energies.
This from the same Conservative government that gutted environmental legislation and withdrew Canada from the Kyoto climate-change treaty.
New Democrats have a better plan.
We’re calling on Stephen Harper to stop his billion-dollar Big Oil giveaway and start investing in the sustainable economy Canadians deserve.
We the undersigned residents of Canada note the following:
- The Conservative government hands more than $1.3 billion in subsidies every year to already profitable oil and gas companies.
- The Prime Minister has broken the clear commitment he made at the G20 meeting in 2009 to phase out these giveaways.
- These subsidies create perverse incentives for high-emission energy sources, discouraging investment in greener, renewable alternatives.
- This money could create thousands of green jobs and help fight climate change if it were invested in renewable energy, clean technology or energy efficiency.
Therefore, we call on the Government of Canada to end federal subsidies to the fossil fuel industry and invest in building a more sustainable economy.
