Save chocolate from climate change

We've long known that the climate crisis could threaten the foods we love—and for chocolate, it's happening right before our eyes.

Excessive rainfall and heatwaves are affecting weather-sensitive cacao trees in West Africa, where farmers grow three-quarters of the world's cocoa—the key ingredient in chocolate. Shrinking harvests have caused the price of cocoa to more than triple over the past year.

The situation is threatening both the future of cocoa and quality of life for thousands of West African small-scale farmers. And for chocolate fans, the current price spike is just the beginning. If we don't act now, the cost of our favorite foods will continue to skyrocket  as our climate crisis intensifies.

We know what needs to be done, but we won't sugarcoat it: there is no quick fix. Saving chocolate will require transforming our current food system into a sustainable one. That's why the Rainforest Alliance is already working with more than 1.2 million cocoa farmers  But farmers need more support than one organization can possibly give—and cocoa-buying companies have a responsibility to help.

This is where you come in. We need people from around the world to demand action from chocolate companies. These companies can help create a more sustainable industry by sourcing from certified farms, paying better prices for their crops, and supporting farmers as they strive for sustainability. Together, we can save chocolate for ourselves and future generations.
