Demand Full Refunds for Unconstitutional Driver Responsibility Fees in Michigan
This is a call from a victim of an outrageous power abuse. 20 years ago, I was penalized as part of the Driver Responsibility Fee (DRF) regime in Michigan - a system that costed me nearly $5000. This financial burden extends far beyond the immediate monetary impact: I lost my driver's license and have been on a relentless journey of trying, failing and trying again to regain my driving rights. The fees and hurdles, not to mention the lawyer expenses, have used up my resources, dictated where I could work, and adversely shaped my life.
These fees were dubbed unconstitutional in 2018. Yet the people who had already paid, like me, have been left in the cold with no reparations. Implemented in 2003, the DRF law was repealed in 2018 following widespread criticism for its harsh penalties on drivers who were unable to pay. Despite this, the state has yet to return the fines it collected from us, the victims of this unfair system.
Michigan residents, we deserve to be heard. The State has ruled that you no longer have to pay any outstanding DRF, but what about us? The people who have suffered not only the financial, but also the social and emotional consequences of these unconstitutional fees? This is a battle for justice, for fairness, and for our right to compensation for the payments we made into a system that was unethical in the first place.
Join us in demanding our constitutional right for full refunds from the Michigan Government for all Driver Responsibility Fees paid. Together, we can fight for the justice we deserve, and the restoration we are owed. Sign this petition today.
