One Way Auto Parts, an automotive recycler located at 3401 E. New York St, in Indianapolis. Currently the city of Indianapolis is trying to limit the number of cars they can keep on their 4 acres to under 60 cars. This goes back to a variance the original owner of One Way got in 1991 and it has not been upgrades since. One Way have changed hands a few times since then and has been operated with a lot more cars than 60. It takes several hundreds of cars in stock to be able to provide parts and be a profitable business. One Way is trying to get the variance amended. Signatures on the petition will help, friends and supporters showing up to the hearing will help tremendously also. The Variance Hearing is November 21st at 1pm at the City County Building 2nd Floor in the assembly room, 200 East Washington St, Indianapolis, IN. Everyone's attendance will be appreciated.
One Way Auto Parts is a lot more than just a local junkyard. They are a very important part of the near eastside community.
1) One Way employees 8-10 employees at any given time. Many of these employees are what many employers would consider unemployable. This includes some that can't read or write, or may be on parole. They work to help get them back into society and earn a living without resorting to crime.
2) They help keep junk cars off the street by buying them and processing the used parts off of them.
3) One Way quietly donates to many local charities to give back to the community.
4) It has become known through out the community if you need a part to fix your car and can't afford it, the owners John and Joe will help you out. It is hard to say how many spare wheels and tires they have gave to a low income neighbor who just didn't have the money to get their car running to make it to work or get their kids to school. And when I say gave, I mean gave, as in free, they didn't charge. It is not uncommon to see one of their employees helping an elderly couple or a single mother getting their car running, just being good neighbors, not charging them.
5) They sponsor many local community activities-many involving auto racing. They even supply several cars for some of the beginner classes so young racers can get involved in racing that otherwise wouldn't be able to. This keeps a lot of Indianapolis Eastside youth off the streets.
These are just a small handful of the things that One Way Auto Parts does for the Eastside Community of Indianapolis. To lose them would be catastrophic for the community, not just the families of the employees that depend on their jobs to survive.
