In 2010, Ron Finley was determined to change South Central LA from a food desert to a food forest. He decided to take his health and the health of his LA community into his own hands and “Plant Some Sh*t,” turning a strip of city-owned land in front of his property into a food oasis.
After a citation, fine and eventual warrant for his arrest over the grass that he transformed into an edible landscape for his community, word spread quickly about the “Gangsta Gardener." But now, Ron’s headquarters are at risk. After the previous owner defaulted on the mortgage, the property was purchased by Strategic Acquisitions, Inc.,
who is now in the late stage of eviction proceedings against Ron and his operation. They're demanding he pay $500,000 for the property or be forcibly removed.
We consider Ron’s project to be an important and impactful community food & farm project, given the outsized role it has played in raising awareness about food deserts, healthy food choices for kids, and inner city social justice issues.
This project is an optimistic & powerful beacon of hope for change in communities everywhere, and we cannot let that light be extinguished without a fight. The property has grown beyond the garden, and now includes the project’s offices, an educational center and a propagation station for more edible urban landscapes. It’s incredible, really.
We are supporting Ron's critical work in every way possible. Please sign this petition to ask Strategic Acquisitions to
stop eviction proceedings and work in good faith to sell the property to Ron Finley Project! We are also asking Mayor Eric Garcetti to step in and work with Strategic Acquisitions to do the right thing. You can make a donation to help raise funds needed here. Thank you!
