We, the undersigned, seek to establish safer conditions between automobiles and cyclists along Rt 28 within the Catskill Park of New York State based on accident statistics and general observations of the unsafe conditions along the route.
Bike route signage and Share the Road signage, though well intended, are cosmetic fixes to a larger safety issue. We the undersigned, are requesting the NYSDOT Region 8 to print bicycle symbols (according to typical DOT guidelines) along the shoulders of Rt 28 as a safety enhancement for all users of the route within the Catskill Park.
We the undersigned, are not requesting a designated / separated "bike lane", but rather an economical safety enhancement that would not impede on any automobile or pedestrian's rights to the shoulders.
This is a common practice along routes throughout New York State and others, where recreation is a common factor. We the undersigned, feel there is no good reason why it should not be implemented along Rt 28 within the Catskill Park.
