A New Illinois Law Will Stop Abusers From Living In The Same Home As Animals. Tell Minnesota To Do The Same!

A crucial new law in Illinois makes it illegal for convicted abusers to own an animal. Perhaps most importantly, though, it also makes it illegal for abusers to even live with an animal at all, even if the pet is not legally in their possession. This amazing piece of legislation makes it much more difficult for abusers to simply transfer ownership on paper and continue violent animal abuse.

Sign now to tell the state of Minnesota: pass animal welfare legislation now! Prevent abusers from owning or living with animals once they are convicted!

The Humane Society estimates that over 1 million animals are abused every year in the United States, but even they recognize that might be an undercount. Given how many different types of animal abuse are normalized in our country, and how many abusers get away with their crimes as a result, we desperately need new policies that can reduce abuser's proximity to animals in the home.

Minnesota has taken some steps to meaningfully protect animals from abuse, but these laws are nowhere near enough. Research shows that animal abusers tend to be repeat offenders. This means that ensuring an abuser is no longer in close contact with any animal -- even if they don't legally own it – is a vital step towards reducing future abuse of more innocent creatures.

While Illinois' bill is wonderful, other states still lag behind in passing similar laws. Minnesota should similarly craft evidence-based policy to improve animal welfare and reduce abuse immediately. Innocent animals' lives are at stake! Sign the petition now if you agree!
