Billy will die at the L.A. Zoo if he is not sent to a sanctuary! Free Billy!
Billy is a male Asian elephant at the L.A. Zoo. He was born in Malaysia. At just four years of age, his mother was killed in front of him and he was forcibly taken from his home, and imprisoned in the L.A. Zoo.
Billy now lives on approximately one-quarter acre of hard cement-like ground, and he is suffering tremendously because of it. Wild elephants can walk up to 100 miles in a day, which means it is virtually impossible for Billy to get the daily exercise he needs to be both physically and psychologically healthy. Billy lives in daily pain and agony.
All day long, Billy displays stereotypical behaviors, repetitive movements, that are often seen in captive animals. His head bobs up and down and he paces. He is forced to perform painful tricks, like standing on his back legs, to entertain the public.
Confinement affects elephants both physically and psychologically. Wild elephants live upwards of 80 years, while zoo elephants often die before reaching 20 years of age.
From his arrival at the L.A. Zoo in 1989 until 1994, Billy was routinely chained each night for approximately 12 to 14 hours at a time. He was continuously tortured with the use of electric shock and beatings with a bullhook. To this day it has affected him mentally and physically.
Like so many elephants before him who have died at the L.A. Zoo, Billy is exhibiting severe symptoms that show he doesn't have long to live. PAWS has 15 acres of soft earth, hills and streams waiting for Billy!
