Humans are allowed company of their own kind, so why aren't animals?
It is illegal in Switzerland to own one guinea pig due to the consequences of them being alone, such as severe depression and loneliness. So why can't we create that law in the UK too?
People who sell social animals and adopt from shops and shelters do not have the legal obligation to sell 2 or more to you, even if they should.
As an example, Rabbits are social animals and should be kept in pairs. However a house rabbit can be kept alone if it receives adequate attention. However, in most cases, rabbits are housed outdoors and on their own, which causes great stress and loneliness.
Guinea pigs live in herds of 10 in the wild and they consist of females, young and one male. Most guinea pigs will be sold on their own and kept by themselves for their whole lives. This is an act of cruelty, as even human company cannot make up for the lack of their own kind.
Gerbils live in pairs or in a 3, but are often sold alone. This is also a cruel act which has severe implications on the animals health and mindset.
These are a few examples of social animals that are often mistreated by being sold or adopted singularly. It is creates depression, loneliness and consequently misbehaving or worse. So can we change this? Do you want to end the suffering of innocent animals in pet shops and those who have been left for adoption?
