Fairfield County, Ohio, continues to use archaic gas chambers to euthanize shelter dogs, despite lethal injection being less expensive, quick and painless. County shelters have put down 578 dogs in 2011, and 183 dogs so far this year.
Gas chambers can take up to 25 minutes to kill an animal, and some have been known to survive the chambers only to be gassed again. Dogs killed in gas chambers are all alone during the procedure. Lethal injection takes moments to work, and allows dogs to be held and comforted throughout the procedure.
Euthanasia should always be a last resort, but there is no excuse for using gas chambers instead of lethal injection. On Tuesday, August 14, county commissioners will vote on whether to eliminate the gassing procedure. Please sign the petition to urge county commissioners to stop gassing dogs in county shelters.

We, the undersigned, are concerned with Fairfield County's use of gas chambers to euthanize shelter dogs. We believe that shelters should switch to the more humane, quicker, painless and less expensive method of lethal injection.
