Demand the removal of the confederate mound monument in oak woods cemetary.

At one time oak woods cemetery denied the right for African Americans to be buried there. This monument built in 1895, a year before plessy vs. ferguson was raised with a towering confederate soldier in 1911 a year after the NAACP was founded also a year where the most amount of confederate monuments were put up from 1861-. This very monument was made to shadow African Americans and instill fear like many other confederate monuments as well as glorify White pride during a time when African Americans were beginning to formally come together to take on the racist injustices that plagued America. Since then the grand crossing community has become majority African American of its 32,000 residents 96% are African American. This monument is rarely visited. If we put a monument of Peter Salem or James Armistead we could rectify a greater monument in our diverse city. Simply to glorify one or two of the most influencial African Americans to our American history. It would be an honored treasure to not only Chicago but to this country. I believe my African American people as well as the residents of grand crossing deserve such a glorious monument and can appreciate and instill the integrity that has been missing from our African American neighborhoods city wide. We can build a statue that stands tall and represents the appreciate of our African American history. Lastly these influential individuals to our country have yet to have a monument dedicated in their name. They deserve to be glorified, it is us that they fought for.
