Spay/Neuter Stray Dogs in Romania
In Bucharest alone, there are hundreds of thousands of stray and wilds dogs. While some are fearful and aggressive, many of them are friendly. Unfortunately, Romania's strategy for controlling the dog population is through euthanasia and mass slaughters (http://www.globalanimal.org/2011/12/20/romania-declares-death-to-stray-dogs/61332/).
Even Romanian citizens know that this is not the right way of controlling the strays. It is time for the Romanian government to recognize the most humane way of diminishing the stray dog population: spaying and neutering them and then letting them find human homes.
Many people try to make the dogs sound horrible by pointing out that people get bitten by them every day. However, consider these numbers: There are over 2-million citizens in the capital of Bucharest and an average of 75 people a day are bitten by a stray dog. That is less than 0.00375% of the population!
So, let's tell Romania to stop being cruel to these poor dogs by killing them. If we spay and neuter them, then they can't reproduce and they have a better chance of finding a home.
Dear Mr. Victor Ponta,
We, the signers, love animals and do not believe that they should be killed for something that is not their fault. We do agree that the stray dog population in Romania is a problem and we have a solution for that: make humane spaying and neutering a law and enforce it.
If every stray is spayed or neutered, then in just ten years, the stray dog population will have already dwindled to a much more manageable number.
Please stop merciless killing and start spaying and neutering.
Thank you.
