Stop the banning of Pit Bulls in Lakewood, Ohio
Recently city council member Brian Powers and backed by mayor Edward Fitzgerald put in a bill to try and ban ownership of pit bull "type" dogs in the City of Lakewood. Powers stated that the animal warden has had too many encounters with these dogs and suggested the ban. Fitzgerald backs the ban saying that one Lakewood resident was bitten in the face and they have tried everything and nothing is working. However, they do not enforce the law, they do not enforce the leash law, and they do not enforce other dog laws.
I personally have been bitten in the face and was mauled by a dalmation in the city of Lakewood. There was no ban put in place for the dalmation. Why does city council believe that if they ban this breed it will eliminate the problem?
My suggestion is this: enforce the leash law, "vicious" dogs (in their eyes, not mine) should wear muzzles in public, make the owners responsible, dogs that have bitten someone should be placed in quarantine while the owner resolves the issue with the victim.
I believe this to be a fifth ammendment violation! We have to fight to keep our dogs!

Please help us to keep our loving and wonderful companions. My dog is like my daughter, I will NOT give her up, just as I would not give up my own child.
We the undersigned are against the potential ban of "pit bull" and "canary dogs" in the City of Lakewood, OH. We feel that this ban would create more problems in the city. We feel that the current laws could be stressed better. We feel that there are ways to live in harmony with responsible "pit bull" and "canary dog" owners in the City of Lakewood without taking away our loved ones. Please work on protecting our families by allowing us to keep our dogs. Require all "pit bull" owners to register with the city animal warden and be required to bring proof of insurance, their muzzle, and wear a special tag that shows they are registered with the city. We thank you for your time and appreciate your attention to this potentially terrible ban.
