A new bill would effectively let bosses fire single women for getting pregnant if the employer does not believe in sex before marriage.

The "First Amendment Defense Act,"
H.R. 2802, would prevent the federal government from taking action against those who believe "that marriage is or should be recognized as the union of one man and one woman, or that sexual relations are properly reserved to such a marriage."
But the bill's language is so broad,
it could allow employers to fire a single woman for getting pregnant by preventing the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) from doing anything about it. Consider the case of the Montana Catholic school teacher who was fired for having a baby out of wedlock. She filed a discrimination charge last year with the EEOC.
If this bill passes, the EEOC wouldn't have been able to take up her case.
An ACLU rep
said the bill would also do away with anti-discrimination protections for LGBT federal contractors and would allow homeless shelters and drug treatment programs that receive federal money to turn away LGBT people.
