For far too long, the U.S. Government has allowed animal cruelty to exist in laboratories all across the country under the guise of research. Hundreds of thousands of lives every year are needlessly violated, abused, tortured, and then finally destroyed and discarded on a whim. So rampant is the practice of systematic torture and destruction of laboratory animals that breeding these creatures for the express purpose of laboratory testing has since blossomed into a profitable industry.
Researchers, advocates, and corporations who finance these studies all argue that laboratory testing on animals is necessary for the safety of their products. However, many companies exist who release competitive products without ever testing on animals. Further, it is evident that the physiologies between humans and lab animals are very different, and therefore difficult to come to conclusive results about how a product tested on a dog could ultimately affect a human. With the technological advances in science today, it is becoming harder and harder to justify such a primitive and barbaric tradition. With computer models and simulations readily available with no moral violations attached, many are left wondering why this practice still exists. Many blame the government for providing grants to help fund these research projects and even participating in animal testing itself. The Department of Defense, USDA, and Department of Agriculture all use animals in testing as well.
There are countless alternatives to the cruel and inhumane practice of animal testing. Rather than destroying all these animals, many of which may have once been the "free to a good home" puppy or kitten that you advertised on Craigslist or the local paper, why don't we use the other means at our disposal? The hundreds of thousands of dogs, cats, rabbits, monkeys, guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets, and other animals people would have normally kept as pets deserve to live as good a life as we do.
For that reason, I am asking for your support on this petition to the U.S. Senate asking that they recognize laboratory animal testing as a form of animal cruelty, a crime and punishable felony in most states and territories. By recognizing that laboratory animal testing is indeed cruel and inhumane, and therefore, a crime, we can finally save them from a tortured existence and pointless death.
To make even more of a difference, contact your senator and representative in the House and let them know that you demand action. Solicit this petition and its idea to politcally active animal welfare groups and political action committees. By using their membership as a voting block, we can influence politicians seeking election.
