In the week leading up to the Kentucky Derby, seven horses died. While these deaths are tragic, the news is not surprising to those familiar with the sport. Horses are regularly pushed to exhaustion and forced to race before they are fully developed. It's a recipe for disaster -- and death. Horses are doing what we ask of them, and in return, they are treated like cars.

Horse racing in the U.S. has a dangerous lack of regulations, leading to a shocking rate of euthanization compared to other countries. According to the Jockey Club, a leading industry organization, more than 7,200 horses died in races from 2009 to 2021. When seven horse deaths during the biggest industry event of the year can be explained away, it's time to reevaluate.

Last year, the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) was implemented to finally regulate horse racing, but it has faced constant legal challenges and pushback from its own community. Now, HISA needs to do its job!
