The cute and colorful yellow-breasted bunting is facing extinction due to vendors selling its meat on the black market in China's Guangdong province. Selling the meat carries a fine of up to 100,000 yuan, but sellers continue to sell the "delicacy" in secret, turning away anyone who doesn't speak the local dialect.
The yellow-breasted bunting has been protected since 2001, but thanks to black market sellers it reached endangered status on November 25, 2013. According to BirdLife global species officer Andy Symes, "[Trapping] was formerly thought to be restricted to a small area of southern China, but has now become more widespread and popular owing to increasing affluence [among mainlanders]."
This bird's population has decreased dramatically in the past decade, and the species' future looks grim at current rates. Please sign the petition to convince the Chinese government to crack down on trapping and sales of the yellow-breasted bunting!
