Save Don Russell Performing Arts Centre

The Don Russell Performing Arts Centre situated on Murdoch Rd in Thornlie, Western Australia is a professional federal and state presenting venue.

On Tuesday October 12, 2010 the City of Gosnells Councillors voted to cease operations as they currently are and want to transform the venue into a hall for hire. This means no programming and no staff.  It is being challenged by the councillors who argued against the motion and it will be revisited at the next council meeting to be held Tuesday October 26, 2010.

UPDATE:  At the Council Meeting held on October 26, there was a tie vote. DRPAC needed a majority for the decision to disinterest to be revoked. The 40 or so public who attended in support for DRPAC were astounded. The public outcry was very emotional. The following morning one of the councillors who voted against revoked their vote. So now it will be looked at again at the next council meeting to be held on Tuesday November 9, where we hope that the motion to revoke will be passed.

This online petition is to show our support to save the Don Russell Performing Arts Centre.  We ask the City of Gosnells to continue their investment in the centre, keep the current staff levels, and continue to be a national presenting venue.

We the undersigned electors of the CIty of Gosnells and beyond request the City of Gosnells to continue their investment in the centre, keep the current staff levels, and continue to be a national presenting venue, for the following reasons:
- The Don Russell Performing Arts Centre was opened in 1994 as a purpose-built, community-owned facility providing a unique and affordable theatre and dance studio for local people.
- DRPAC would lose arts circuit shows if the City of Gosnells took over management because it would no longer be a specialised performing arts venue.
- We believe it is important to make sure that local music, drama and dance groups have a place to perform and that touring productions will remain easily accessible to people who live in the City of Gosnells.
- The City of Gosnells as a local government authority has a responsibility to provide cultural services to their communities as they do other community services.  Arts centres require subsidies in the same way as a library, swimming pool or sporting fields.
- The Don Russell Performing Arts Centre attracts patrons from neighbouring shires and cities, thus bringing people into the City of Gosnells.
