HEREWithout any explanation whatsoever, over 200 community youth are unable to fully participate in the Crenshaw Colts Youth Football League (CCYFL) due to Audubon Middle School denying the program access to its facilities.
CCYFL is a successful program that provides a safe haven for LA youth, as well as resources for tutoring, mentorship and leadership training. For eight years, CCYFL have been allowed to use facilities at Audubon Middle School for football practice, and this year they have been denied those privileges after nearly a decade of compliance with the rules and regulations of both the LA Unified School District as well as Audubon Middle School, with no explanation as to why.
CCYFL has eligibility requirements, usually in the form of behavior and grade parameters. These standards have been in place since the inception of the program and have been critical components to its success. Although this information has been provided to Audubon's Principal, Dr. Davis, and Vice Principal, Mr. Brown, CCYFL are without amicable resolution.
CCYFL's success is evidenced by the players that have gone on to Crenshaw High and won the 2009-2010 City Championships, in which many of those players have gone to college on full scholarships and some have been drafted to the NFL.
We, the undersigned, draw attention to Audubon Principal Dr. Davis, Audubon Vice Principal Mr. Brown, the Office of the Superintendent and the LA Unified School District to the following:
THAT:
- The hours between 3pm and 6pm are peak hours for juvenile crime and drug exposure (Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, 2002)
- 76% of Americans agree that funding should increase for afterschool programs (Afterschool Alliance & Lake, Snell, Perry & Assoc., Inc., 2008)
- 15.1 million school age children--more than a quarter of all youth--are alone and unsupervised after school, an increase of nearly 1 million children in the past five years (America After 3 PM, 2009)
- Athletic scholarships are one of the ways students who excel in sports can continue to participate and finance higher education
THEREFORE, your petitioners request the Office of the Superintendent and the LA Unified School District to support the CCYFL in maintaining our programs at Audubon Middle School.
