Dear G8 Leaders,
Please act immediately to forgive the inexhaustible debts of developing nations. While struggling to make payments to the world's wealthiest nations, Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) are forced to neglect the well being of their citizens.
With the money that goes toward debt payments, HIPC could afford to focus on education, healthcare, and HIV prevention/treatment. Nations who have already received debt relief, such as Nigeria and Tanzania, have proven successful in development efforts.
New schools are being built and more students are able to attend schools. New teachers are being recruited to keep up with the demand for better education. More people in developing nations are seeking health care because governments are able to pay the medical fees that the people cannot afford. Better health care means that preventable diseases such as typhoid and malaria are decreasing risks. HIV and AIDS treatment and prevention are finally able to benefit those who need it most.
The world is fighting to progress and you have the opportunity to make it truly successful. Give struggling nations the chance to reprioritize funding and focus on development.
Choosing to relieve the debt of HIPC will not hurt those countries receiving debt payments because the payments are insignificant in comparison to the powerhouse economies of the lenders.
