The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has recently proposed a plan to open up Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge for hunting of deer, fox, and coyote.
• Hunting would have a negative impact on other visitors to the refuge.
During designated hunting times the refuge would be closed to all other visitors, except hunters.
Over 325,000 people per year visit the Sachuest Point Refuge to enjoy a restorative connection with nature. There is a full slate of activities for nature lovers, birders, photographers, walkers, and fishermen at Sachuest Point.
•Hunting would disrupt the habitat of resident and migratory bird species at the refuge.
Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge is a 242-acre site nestled between the Sakonnet River and Rhode Island Sound, and boasts the largest winter population of harlequin ducks on the East Coast.
Over 200 bird species are supported by the habitat at the Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge, with notable sightings of snowy owls, northern harriers, and peregrine falcons.
• Hunting would disrupt the tranquil environment that visitors enjoy at the refuge.
Local residents and visitors alike enjoy walking the tranquil trails along the salt marsh, upland shrub, and rocky coast of the Refuge.
Given its small size and present ongoing successful purposing, we believe that Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge is NOT the right place for hunting.
We request the US Fish and Wildlife Service immediately withdraw this proposal for hunting at the Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge.
We, the undersigned petitioners, are firmly against opening up Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge to hunting of any kind.
We’ll also notify the local press and other government officials of the opposition to hunting at Sachuest.
