My name is Kenya and I am interested in bringing awareness to the prison conditions at Lake City Correctional Facility (youth prison). I am the parent of an incarcerated young man and the lack of state required programs and consistent lockdowns are equivalent to solitary confinement in my opinion. In addition, they can only make one 15 minute call per day!!!!
The staff has used lockdowns as a power tool that is damaging the rehabilitation structure that a youth prison should have. The state of Florida says they must have 12-16 hours of programming but yet they are locked in the cell some days 22-23 hours. They are not offered alternatives to their day outside of a lockdown if counseling or educational opportunities are not a part of their day!!
How is keeping these young men on lock down and not programming helping them? This is form of mental abuse!!!!! This prison should be investigated AND the guards that are using a lockdown to limit their workload or to flex their power. I heard them call a lockdown because one person would not pull up his pants!!!! The conditions are so bad that these young men are wanting to give up the youthful offender classification so they can go to an adult prison.
On 1/5/2020 this prison is going on a 30 day lockdown. I would like to bring awareness to these horrible conditions. Please help me!!!!! Please call (386) 755-3379 to speak to the prison warden regarding these conditions.
