Only days ago, "the world's loneliest orca" Kiska, died from a bacterial infection at Marineland Canada.
While in captivity at Marineland, Kiska spent the last twelve years of her life in complete isolation in a confined space; an unimaginable amount of suffering for any member of a highly social species.
Thanks to widespread coverage of Kiska's horrific story, activists like you successfully pressured the Canadian parliament to pass Bill S-203, legislating the end of marine mammals in captivity.
However, while no new animals can be imported into captivity, there are still reports of dozens of beluga whales and dolphins held at Marineland!
Marine mammals are intelligent, emotional, and social. They do not deserve to suffer in confined spaces away from others of their kind.
Camille Labchuk, executive director of Animal Justice, was one of many people who shared their grief this week: "When I heard that Kiska died, I just bawled, which I almost never do. It's frustrating for so many people because it felt like we were so close to being able to get her out and she just couldn't hold on long enough."
