Send Thanks to Ten Firefighters who Rescued the One-eyed Horse from the River

Firefighters launched a dramatic rescue to haul a stricken one-eyed horse from a river in Lancashire.

Ruby the 21-year-old mare stumbled into the River Irwell near Bolton while out with her rider.

After receiving the call, 10 firefighters from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service 

spent an hour hauling the distressed animal to safety.

Accompanied by a vet, they tied a harness around Ruby before dragging the animal to the river bank which, 

after a brief rest, trotted back to the stables, where she was given the all-clear by a vet.

A fire service spokesman said: "It took around an hour 

and 10 firefighters to carefully hoist Ruby out of the water.

“She was exhausted when we got to her.

“There was obviously a vet in attendance to ensure her safety.”
