There was international outcry recently when SANParks announced it would destroy a lion that had escaped for a second time from the Karoo National Park, according to a report on http://www.iol.co.za/
The Park had announced that it will would not take Sylvester the lion back once it had been recaptured and that he would be killed.
However, international pressure has forced a turnaround - the report states, "After his latest escape, SANParks announced it would put him down, but then back-tracked on the decision after objections from animal lovers."
The Park should never have made the announcement. Sylvester and other lions like him could easily be spared by relocation to a private (no hunting!) reserve or a safe area in the Parks.
Lions are now listed as endangered - everything should be done to save the them. Will you join me in urging the South African Government to introduce legislation to ensure escaped or so-called 'troublesome lions' are given every chance of survival and that rangers are equipped with tranquilizers?
