The Endangered Species Act (ESA) is a cornerstone of American environmental policy.
It has saved countless species from the brink of extinction, and has the added bonus of protecting entire ecosystems from pollution or industrial development. It's responsible for many success stories, such as protecting the American bald eagle and helping its populations recover after decline.
Now, anti-wildlife politicians are trying to
gut the Act, despite the fact that - or perhaps because - it's one of the most important pieces of environmental legislation in the country's history.
Sign now to demand Congress protect and strengthen the Endangered Species Act (ESA), not weaken it!In one week alone, right-wing members of Congress proposed some horrific changes to the ESA. Some of the proposals include slashing funding for the act's enforcement by over $200 million. They also suggest
removing and preventing protections for numerous species, including the beloved gray wolf, the dancing lesser prairie chicken, and the northern long-eared bat.
These dangerous proposals also include blocking exciting programs to facilitate the reintroduction of species to the wild, such as bringing the grizzly bear back to the North Cascades.
If Congress accepted and enacted these changes, the consequences could be dire.
We are currently in the middle of a sixth mass extinction event, with biodiversity disappearing at a horrifying rate. We cannot afford to back off from safeguarding vulnerable animals!
The Endangered Species Act must be protected and strengthened, not weakened. Sign the petition to tell Congress to act quickly before more animals and ecosystems suffer!
