A new report by Mighty Earth shows how massive deforestation in Argentina is linked to U.S. biodiesel mandates. Argentina is a "hot-spot" for deforestation, which is driven by the expansion of industrial agricultural, mostly for soy production.
At the same time, Argentina exported enormous amounts of soy-based biodiesel to the U.S. in 2016, accounting for about one-fifth of all biodiesel consumed that year. Behind all this is the U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), which mandates increasing biofuels consumption through 2022 and has driven Argentina to increase soy-based biodiesel production for U.S. export.
Join us in asking Congress to reform this policy. Policymakers have a major opportunity this year to reduce mandates for polluting, dirtier-than-oil biofuels. Ask your member of Congress to take action now!
