Rhode Island- Support Better Protection for Elephants

  • van: Animal Advocates
  • ontvanger: Rhode Island Senators, Jack Reed, Sheldon Whitehouse
A bill to protect elephants has been introduced in Rhode Island, (HB 5853, SB 813, also known as "An Act Relating to Animals and Animal Husbandry"), that would ban the chaining of elephants and prevent the use of bullhooks and similar weapons. Using or possessing a bullhook by any person who houses, possesses, or travels with elephants used in circuses or traveling shows would be prohibited.

A bullhook is a cruel rod with a sharp metal hook and point on the end that are used to strike, jab, hook, prod, and beat elephants on the most sensitive parts of their bodies causing unnecessary pain, suffering, trauma and stress. The use of bullhooks on elephants has been abandoned by most zoos.

The leading cause of death for captive elephants is foot problems causing by chaining and forcing the elephant, (a migratory animal), to stand in one spot for too long. It leads to joint problem and bone infections- and ultimately, death.

Tell Rhode Island Senators to support bills SB 813/HB 5853, "An Act Relating to Animals and Animal Husbandry".
