One hundred and sixty five kangaroos on Swan Island are due to be shot by the Defence Department, according to a report in the Geelong Advertiser.
The Department of Defence has been granted a permit to shoot the kangaroos by the Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.
However, opponents say the cull is unnecessary. The story reports: "Australian Society of Kangaroos president Nikki Sutterby said the “pretty horrific” permit was among the largest issued for the island and that 165 is a fair percentage of the population.“We’re not sure what the problem actually is, there’s no credible evidence of (the kangaroos’ impact) on other native wildlife,” she said.
“Kangaroos are quite capable of controlling their population based on their environment.
“There’s no evidence whatsoever of starvation and no evidence killing improves animal welfare outcomes.
“It’s all a big cover-up because they know the public won’t be happy about it.”
The story reports that the Defence Department has in previous years tried to limit the RSPCA's knowledge of its kangaroo culls.
