For way too long, many of us cat caretakers have taken on the task of caring for the thousands of community cats in Contra Costa County. Once we become aware of their needs, suffering, and their very existence, we can't "unsee" their plight.
Mothers giving birth in dangerous situations, leaving them in more danger while trying, trying, to find food, dead and dying kittens everywhere...tragedy upon tragedy.
Dogs, being more obvious, are not allowed to breed and suffer this way. they are seen in ways that cats are not. Nor are they trapped and neutered, then returned to the streets, as cats often are.
The solution, in addition to creating awareness, is funding for more clinics, vouchers given for spay/neuter, more fosters, and for support for clinics now in existence.
In the long run, prevention of runaway cat populations and the attendant misery is more cost effective than the half measures now in place. More funding, please!!!
