Stop Violence Against LGBT People in South Africa

South Africa's constitution promises equality for all of its citizens, but that promise isn't being kept for LGBT people, according to a new report by Human Rights Watch. The report indicates that sexual and physical violence, including rape and murder, is rampant in South Africa and that police have turned a blind eye to these incidents.

The report includes the case of one South African lesbian who was repeatedly raped by a family member, her soccer coach, and her pastor, all in an attempt to "convert" her and show her how to be a "real" woman. Her case is just one of many instances of anti-LGBT brutality, including a series of slayings of lesbian women in South African townships.

Tell the South African government to stand up for the ideals of its constitution by enforcing its laws. Sign this petition to tell the state that the violence against LGBT people must end now.
We the undersigned are deeply disturbed by the Human Rights Watch report of sexual and physical violence directed at lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in South Africa. The report includes many cases of brutality, including rape and murder. The South African constitution guarantees equality for all of its citizens, but these constitutional protections are not being enforced when it comes to crimes against LGBT people. We urge you to uphold the ideals of the South African constitution by working to end violence against LGBT people and by bringing the perpetrators of these crimes to justice.
