THE MAD CONNAUGHT

The Royal Connaught is a landmark hotel built opened in 1916.It holds one of the most prominent locations in the entire city of Hamilton at the eastern edge of the Gore. From it's heyday with dances in the rooftop ballroom, royal guests and thousands of weddings in the grand lobby, the hotel is now vacant and facing a proposal to be turned into a rental/subsidized housing project.  Half the building would be subsidized units and the other half would be market rate rentals.While recognizing the need for affordable housing options and more residents downtown, this is our only grand, historic hotel and should remain so.  We are asking city council to reject this proposal in favour of seeing this building restored as a prominent hotel again in the future.
