Following calls from leading international academics (including Professor Noam Chomsky, Paul Gilroy, Charles Tripp and 67 others), we the undersigned call on the University of Nottingham to reinstate Dr. Rod Thornton and to launch an independent public inquiry into the claims made by Dr. Rod Thornton in his article "Radicalisation at universities or radicalisation by universities?: How a student's use of a library book became a 'major Islamist plot'" (which was presented at the British International Studies Association (BISA) conference in Manchester on 28 April 2011.)

We also wish to recognise the substantial contributions made by Dr. Thornton to the School of Politics and International Relations as a lecturer and personal tutor, recalling that he was given the award of "Best Lecturer, 2008" as voted for by University of Nottingham students from the School of Politics and International Relations during the tumultuous period in which all of these events occurred.

We believe that he has showed unwavering support for the welfare and research interests of his students - invaluable qualities for a lecturer in any institution of higher education.
