What Happened to Second Chances

What if your second chance was taken away? After spending 10.5 months in a New Jersey state prison and with 19 days until his release date, Tom Lewis is being charged with felon in possession of a firearm. With plane tickets purchased, plans made to see his wife and ready for a fresh start and clean slate Tom no longer has a release date in sight. 
Facts: The firearm was unloaded in the trunk, registered and the owner of the car is also a concealed weapons permit holder. Tom never asked to borrow the gun, it was never used. 
The "crime" being in a vehicle with a firearm. Do you ask the owner of the car you get into or the home you walk into if there is a firearm within it? 
Tom was looking forward to finally starting a life of children with his new wife, a life full of joy and love with his family.
