Lake Clifton houses one of the last living communities of thrombolites in the world ; it is also a unique place for highly endangered species of reptiles, marsupials and migratory birds. And a high place of the Aboriginal myths of Genesis. In these myths, thrombolites are the eggs of the Rainbow Snake, and their death would be the end of the world.
It is now threatened by urban growth, although the scientific community has pointed it as a unique ecosystem for several decades, particularly in obtaining the classification of the still living thrombolites as most endangered communities by Peter Garret, the Australian Minister of Environment.
The only chance of survival of this unique habitat is now a World Heritage listing by the Unesco, leading to an international protection of the site.

Le lac Clifton abrite parmi les derniers spécimens de thrombolites vivants au monde, c’est aussi un lieu unique pour des espèces très menacées d’oiseaux migrateurs, de reptiles et de marsupiaux. Ainsi qu’un haut-lieu des mythes de la genèse aborigène. Dans ces mythes, les thrombolites représentent les œufs du Serpent Créateur, et leur mort la fin du monde.
Il est aujourd’hui menacé par la croissance urbaine, bien que la communauté scientifique l’ai désigné depuis plusieurs décennies comme un lieu unique au monde, en particulier en obtenant le classement des thrombolites comme communauté biologique en voie de disparition.
La seule chance de survie de ce biotope exceptionnel aujourd’hui est son inscription au patrimoine mondial, ce qui conduira à une protection internationale.
