Partnerships save animals from overcrowded shelters

More animals are euthanized in California shelters than almost any other state in the United States. California's average save rate for shelter animals is 82%, and more than 37,000 animals lose their lives in shelters in our state every year. Overcrowding, lack of resources, complex medical issues, and disease all contribute to animals in shelters losing their lives at such a high rate.

Humane Society Silicon Valley increases lifesaving in California by reducing local shelter intake and supporting our Regional Rescue partners to help animals in need, like Cocoa. Our mission is to save lives, keep families together, and create a better future for pets and their people.

When we heard about Cocoa, we learned the German shepherd had been hit by a car. She had life-threatening injuries and had been dropped off at a shelter overrun with big dogs. In spite of all their efforts, that shelter's staff knew they couldn't save Cocoa – so they called us.

We believe that every animal deserves care. And for Cocoa that meant amputating her broken leg.

One day after surgery, Cocoa showed us how happy and grateful she was, and a few weeks later, it was clear her tri-pawed status wouldn't stop her from running, fetching, and cuddling. Once she fully recovered, we found her forever match!

We envision a future in which no healthy or treatable animals entering animal shelters in California are euthanized. This can happen by creating sustainable partnerships to prevent overcrowding. Through our own partnerships, we are now able to save more than 94% of all animals entering shelters in our county.
