Tell President Obama to Support Oil Transparency in Ghana

For years, Oxfam and its supporters have worked hard to make sure that mining and oil companies are held accountable for the impacts they have on communities worldwide. Recently, we helped pass legislation in the U.S. to make these companies open their books.

However, this is still a battle that needs to be fought -- Oxfam is now going to take this fight to the ground, country by country -- and we are starting in Ghana, where years of gold mining has caused serious damage to the health of farming communities as well as the environment. Now, the country is about to develop its oil reserves, which could help end the country's poverty -- or make it even worse, if the oil money is not managed properly.

It's time to give communities even more power over where the money goes. Urge Obama to support tougher oil transparency laws in Ghana.
Dear President Obama,

For years, gold mining has caused serious damage to the health of Ghana's farming communities as well as the environment. Now, the country is about to develop its oil reserves, which could help end the country's poverty - or make it even worse, if the oil money is not managed properly.

A bill has been introduced in Ghana's parliament that would make oil companies responsible for disclosing their payments. This information will help Ghanaians hold their government accountable to make sure the new oil wealth goes to health, education and other vital needs.

I'm writing to encourage you to support tougher oil transparency laws in Ghana.
