URGENT: Demand That OUR UK Wildlife STAYS Protected!

The future of the National Wildlife Crime Unit (NWCU) is at immediate risk due to funding cuts. The NWCU helps hundreds of animals, both wild and tame, and brings poachers and perpetrators to justice. In the last few days we've heard that Defra, which provides much of the funding for the NWCU, has agreed to cut around 30% of its annual budget, and that the NWCU will be one of the first victims. Current NWCU funding ends in MARCH 2016! Please sign this petition to demand that the NWCU remains funded, to protect UK wildlife from poaching, capture, butchering, cruelty, and population depletion.

The impact of the NWCU being scrapped would be immediate tragedy for wild animals. Wildlife crime is abundant and shows no signs of easing either across the UK or internationally. Animals are hunted, smuggled, butchered for their body parts or kept alive in order to be sold on. Thousands of animals suffer and die in the UK every year as a direct result of wildlife crime The NWCU is absolutely critical in the fight against wildlife criminals.

The unit investigates and prosecutes wildlife criminals that local police forces simply wouldn’t be able to deal with, without them. Just a couple of weeks ago, two such criminals pled guilty to offences relating to the possession and offering for sale of two wild peregrine falcons on Facebook! The expertise and experience of staff at the unit was vital to their conviction, when the local police were not going to do anything!

The unit has been heralded by the Government for the past few years as a shining example of their unwavering commitment to tackling the Illegal Wildlife Trade. They have been determined to show how seriously they take this issue, with its links to serious, organised crimes. As well as signing this petition, people in the UK, please take the time to write an email to your local MP, urging them to take a stand and demand that the Government saves the NWCU.
