Cheif Roy Whitehead, Woodville Ohio Police Dept
219 W Main St, Woodville, OH 43469 (419) 849-3020
We the People are demanding the termination of Officer Steve Gilkerson. Officer Stever Gilkerson acted carelessly upon a traffic stop on Us Route 20, on November 3rd, 2014 where he shot and severely injured a family pet named Moses. Being a trained K-9 Officer, Gilkerson of all people should have known that Moses posed no threat as he approached the scene of the traffic stop wagging his tail. Officer Gilkerson drew his weapon and shot the labrador causing extensive damage to the dog and endangered the people of the traffic stop and passer-bys by firing his weapon in close proximity. Witnesses refuted Officer Gilkerson's claim that Moses was aggressive and he had no other choice but to shoot.
We the People are quite aware of the increasing problems in Officer -Dog encounters and how the officers resort to lethal force in these encounters. According to the eye-witnesses they were not in fear of Moses, but how Officer Gilkerson carelessly fired his weapon upon the dog and in the line of traffic. This type of action is endangerment to the public, kills and injures our pets, traumatizes children and devastates families.
We the People are demanding the termination of Officer Steve Gilkerson immediately. We are also demanding that any costs associated with the medical treatment that Moses received be the financial burden of Officer Gilkerson for his actions. We ask that he be charged as any other citizen with the crime of Felony Animal Cruelty and that the Woodville Police Department mandate officer-canine encounter training for all of it's officers. A formal apology from Officer Steve Gilkerson for the family members who were devastated by the injuries Moses sustained is in order.
