No Wal-Mart in Remington
According to The Daily Record, Wal-Mart has committed to the 25th Street Station, as it is now called, a development project in the Remington neighborhood of Baltimore City at the former Anderson Automotive site. Rhoda Washington, a Wal-Mart regional senior manager, says that This area has informed us that they want a Walmart and that its so consistent with where Baltimore is headed as far as the green movement.
Washington's information is false, as residents were surprised by the news of the incoming Wal-Mart when it was released on 2/24/2010.
Residents are now deeply concerned for businesses in surrounding neighborhoods, such as Hampden, Charles Village, Waverly, and North Station Arts District among others. A Wal-Mart in this location is likely to be a great detriment to the hardware stores, grocery stores, drug stores, clothing stores, craft supply and other specialty shops, among others, in the area.
Zoning variances are still needed for this project, so there is still a chance for Baltimore residents to do something about it. In addition to emailing Baltimore City Council members and Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake your concerns, please sign this petition to let the developers and city government know how you feel.
When the petition reaches 2000, a letter from the Petitionsite will be sent, including the petition and signatures, to the Mayor, Baltimore City Council and the developers of the project.
According to the Mayor's Office there will be several reviews and public hearings before it is finalized and that they welcome community input at every stage.
Thank you to everyone who supports No Wal-Mart In Remington.
