MALIK THE LION
REPORTEDLY THE SADDEST LION
February 2016 ..."Thin, mane matted, impotent posture and sad looking - the king of beasts in the Chemnitz Zoo is a pathetic picture"...
..."alone in an unsuitable enclosure"...
..."The lion Malik at the zoo is getting worse and worse. His health has been further aggravated by the doctors. Neither infusions or medication or special diet have brought an improvement. His blood levels are very poor, reported zoo boss Anja Dube. Moreover, the lion will eat only irregularly and thereby continuously declines. The crowd favorite Malik suffers from a chronic renal failure. It is unclear how long he has to live"...
Malik has fast become a household name. This still magnificent lion (although thin and matted) spends his days alone and ill. Suffering from cataracts and starved of companionship after his mate lioness Kimba passed away in February 2016, Malik exhibits signs of depression. He appears thin and listless.
Lions in the wild generally live 10-14 years. In captivity they can live an average of 20 years. Malik who is now 12 surely deserves to end his days somewhere other than a cage.
Malik was hand raised at Chemnitz Zoo after his mother Luena abandoned him. (He was the only cub to survive) In January 2005, six month old Malik was examined at the animal clinic of the Zoo in Leipzig, Germany. Besides the examination for cataract (his lion aunt has the disease), Malik was implanted with an electronic chip which is considered the 'I.D. card' for animals.
The television series "Elefant, Tiger & Co" where stories from the Leipzig Zoo are told featured among others, the little lion cub Malik who was the secret star of this television series. His birth was filmed and shows he was lovingly cared for by his mother Luena (who we now know shortly after abandoned him) Episode 61 broadcast July 9, 2004 shows his birth.
The King of the Jungle was never to be his title. In the wild Malik would have enjoyed a life that sadly he has been denied. Male lions are territorial, but within a pride they are often affectionate and when resting, seem to enjoy lots of touching, head rubbing, licking and purring.
Malik has served Leipzig Zoo well; he has many followers who are saddened to see the dismal life he now leads.
Malik desperately needs to be released from being on display. It is time for him to be allowed to retire in safe surroundings where he can be cared for and live out his life as freely and naturally as possible.
Please give your support to retire Malik by signing and sharing this petition.
Don't let him down, help fight for his release to an appropriate sanctuary. Comments concerning his health issues from a cub and the fact he was raised in captivity do add to his unique circumstances. An old, ill and depressed lion deserves to have his needs addressed by the Zoo who understandably care for him. Could the answer be that the Zoo itself be part of a Sanctuary? Please share your thoughts in the comments section when you sign.
Please read the petition letter below.

Dear....
We respectfully request that Malik is allowed to finally say goodbye to living his life as a caged specimen on display. Malik has earned the right to live his final years in a more peaceful setting, safe and free from prying eyes.
He should now be released into a sanctuary where he can be monitored but allowed freedom and integration with another mate for companionship.
A "sanctuary" can be many things. Perhaps the Zoo need to include a sanctuary as part of their facilities. Malik would not be the only ill, elderly, hand reared wild animal in this situation. A step forward would be directing profits into such a facility, addressing the needs of Malik and the many others like him.
The time to do this is now. Visitors to the Zoo have remarked on his sad condition and many thousands of people from all over the world are giving support to this request.
The article "Germany wants to be trendsetter in animal welfare" (see full article link) tells the world that Germany wants change.
Please take the necessary steps in granting Malik his release before it is too late for him.
Thank you for your time.
